The TEQUIO LEADERSHIP CENTER at Hacienda Monarca

Our History

The TEQUIO LEADERSHIP CENTER at Hacienda Monarca is a subsidiary program of Mexicayotl Academy of Excellence. The center is dedicated to four key areas of focus:


• Critical Border Studies
• Land Back Sustainable Living
• Dual Language Intercultural Education
• Place Based Youth Leadership

Mission

The TEQUIO LEADERSHIP CENTER provides border youth and their allies with training, skills, and experience needed to authentically connect with their cultura, comunidad, and the desire to create cambio.

Vision

Living and creating in the spirit of our ancestors taught through the sacred teachings of the TEQUIO.

TEQUIO translates very simply to the responsibility that exists to do community work. 

Hacienda Monarca is a 37 acre ranch nestled in the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area along the U.S. – Mexico border.

    The hacienda offers accommodations that include:

    • a restored 100 year old hacienda style home that sleeps 15
    • a ranch style casita that sleeps 5
    • a spacious and comfortable bunk house that sleeps 20

    Additional accommodations include:

    • a large main kitchen
    • two auxiliary kitchens
    • a large dining area that sits 18
    • various outdoor patios
    • a pool and oasis area

    The outdoor spaces feature one of a kind native habitats, an outdoor kitchen, a hay barn, and a beautifully manicured lawn that has served as the backdrop to many majestic experiences for our guests and program participants.

    TEQUIO LEADERSHIP CENTER

    The TEQUIO LEADERSHIP CENTER offers a unique educational experience that is focused on collaboration, intercultural dialogue, and environmental stewardship. Our unique experiences include:

    • K-12 Day & Night Programs
    • University & Gap Year Programs
    • U.S. Border & International Trips
    • Exchanges & Residencies
    • Conferences, Events, & Retreats
    • Fellowships & Internships

    Our programs offer a comprehensive itinerary to equip participants with skills and knowledge necessary to become effective leaders in their communities. Through intercultural connection we learn how our language, culture, and community are powerful assets that inspire change. Our goal is to utilize these assets in leadership and advocacy work.

    With the permission of our ancestors, we honor the traditions and heritage of our community while we also push forward toward a more just and equitable future.
