Mexicayotl Academy of Excellence (MAE) is committed to providing a learning environment free from discrimination, harassment, and bullying. This policy aims to prevent such behaviors and outline procedures for addressing incidents, ensuring the safety and dignity of all students and staff.
Definitions
Discrimination: Unfair or unequal treatment of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
Harassment: Unwelcome conduct based on protected characteristics that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.
Bullying: Intentional aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of power and is repeated over time. This includes physical, verbal, relational, and cyberbullying.
Prohibited Conduct
The district prohibits all forms of discrimination, harassment, and bullying on school property, at school-sponsored events, and through electronic communication. This includes, but is not limited to:
Physical aggression or attacks
Verbal insults, slurs, or derogatory comments
Social exclusion or spreading rumors
Cyberbullying through text messages, social media, or other digital platforms 4. Reporting Procedures
Students, parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, or bullying to the designated school official, such as the principal or a district administrator. Reports can be made verbally or in writing and may be submitted anonymously.
Investigation and Response
Upon receiving a report, the district will promptly investigate the allegations in a fair and impartial manner. The investigation will include interviews with involved parties and witnesses, and a review of relevant evidence.
If the investigation substantiates the claim, the district will take appropriate corrective action, which may include disciplinary measures, counseling, or training. The district will also provide support to victims and take steps to prevent recurrence.
Retaliation Prohibited
MAE strictly prohibits retaliation against individuals who report or participate in the investigation of discrimination, harassment, or bullying. Retaliatory actions will result in disciplinary consequences.
Prevention and Education
MAE will implement educational programs to promote awareness and prevention of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. This includes training for staff and age-appropriate instruction for students.
Policy Dissemination
This policy will be disseminated annually to students, parents, and staff and will be included in student and employee handbooks. The policy will also be available on the district’s website.
Compliance with Legal Requirements
This policy is in accordance with federal and state laws, including Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The district will comply with all legal obligations related to preventing and addressing discrimination, harassment, and bullying.
Review and Revision
MAE will regularly review this policy and its implementation to ensure effectiveness and compliance with legal standards. Revisions will be made as necessary to address emerging issues and incorporate best practices
